A proper slope

A properly graded slope achieves quite a few things. By "tracking " it in, this not only keeps erosion down to a minimum, but also helps to hold seed while germinating. A slope 0f 5:1 or 6:1 is suitable for mowing.

When you have apples....make applesauce?

Sometimes when I get a lot of "junk" fill dirt, I try to make the most out of it. Large rocks, roots, clay, mud, etc......I deal with it all.

This is some pretty rough material I recieved last week.

This is what it looks like when I get done with it.

How to build a job - Part 3

When planting grass seed for erosion control purposes, use annual ryegrass seed. It germinates very quickly and helps to hold the soil in place. This grass came up in 9 days.

Fill dirt is trucked in from another location and the spreading and grading begins.

This particular job is being worked from the back side out to the front, due to the fact that the trucks cannot travel thru the wet material they are bringing in. They run on the existing ground and I build it up to grade as we go.

A typical truck in our area carries 10 cubic yards of dirt.

How to build a job - Part II

DAY TWO

Once the perimeter berms are in place they need to be seeded and mulched with straw.

And then a check dam added to filter the run-off silt.

A construction entrance made of #1 VDOT stone is added to help with control of mud not leaving the site on vehicle and dump truck tires.

Once all of this has been installed, the county inspector is notified and he will come inspect and issue an Erosion & Sediment Control Report. At that point, the real work begins.

How to build a job - Part I

"DAY ONE"

"The beginning"

I started a small job up in Loudoun County this past week and I thought it might be interesting for others to see how I go about a job from the beginning to the end. Day 1 is arriving with the machine and beginning the erosion control process. Per the plans and permits, I have to install a perimeter berm around the site to contain the run-off. This is accomplished with the stripping of the existing topsoil, placing it in the berms and at the end of the job respreading it.

"Stripped topsoil just pushed up" "Same topsoil now dressed and tracked in"

Next, there was a very large pin oak tree in the way, so that had to be removed, cut up and placed outside of the work area. This gives the owner the opportunity to burn the brush later and also have some good usable firewood.

"Tree Up" "Tree down"

Brentsville grading job

I finished a small job in Brentsville this past week that included stripping this yard of existing, usable topsoil, hauling in over 60 loads of fill dirt, respreading the onsite topsoil and also adding 10 loads of imported topsoil and re-grading the entire area. The owner raked and prepped for seed.

Spring Schedule

Well...after an exciting and very wet / snowy winter, we just recieved another blow to the dirt world with another 5" of rain. It WAS starting to dry up very nicely last week, but the recent wet spell has forced us to open our fill dirt dumpsites later than usual. If all goes well, they should be open by the end of this month. I will keep you posted. Thanks.

Bare Ground?

Who would have thought I would find the only "bare ground" in Northern Virginia. This is inside the polo barn that my customer built over the winter. Did some touch up so they could play on Saturday.

2010 Snow Storm

We had over 22" of snow here yesterday and the excavation process was successful. Wishing I had the track loader, but......
Anyway, we made do with the trusty John Deere and snow shovels. No telling when we will actually see the ground again. Calling for more snow on Tuesday.

From the past

I found a few pictures of some demolition projects we had when I was with the John Driggs Co, Inc. The first one's (above) are of a eleven story building that CDI, Inc. imploded for us on Wheeler Rd. at the PG County/DC line. The other one's (below) are of a large six story building at the Navy Yard we took down with a backhoe and large crane w/ headache ball.
